This book is great! I like it a lot. It has 23 songs, all in the guitar-friendly keys of C, G, and D. I’ve played through them all. They are a lot of fun. There are a couple of things that make this so good. For one, it’s good for practicing your sight-reading. These are all easy songs, but going through them carefully really helps to loosen up your fingers and sharpen up your sight-reading. It’s more fun than just practicing scales.
Another thing is that it’s good for rhythm practice. I already knew most of the chords used here, but doing the simple strum pattern in this book consistently is difficult. It looks easy, but it’s not. Hitting the base note and driving the rhythm without missing a string or buzzing a note takes lots of practice. But after doing these simple songs over and over, I’ve really started to see some improvement in my rhythm playing. I know this will help me a lot the next time I play in a group.
Another benefit is this book helps you in the skill of playing and singing at the same time. They are simple melodies with simple chords and singing while playing helps you get some good practice and a better feel for that.
Finally, these are all just really fun songs. They are old folk songs, a lot of which you probably already know. But like me, until you started playing you didn’t realize it. You will be playing and suddenly think, “Oh, it’s THAT song! I know that one!” It’s really fun to hear an old tune from your childhood and see the title and words to it. It’s even more fun to play it.
Most of the songs in here get a one page treatment, but there are a few that get a two page layout, like “There Is a Tavern in the Town”. I do wish this book came with more than cursory lyrics for each song, but that’s no biggie.
I’ve also bought Mel Bay’s “Fun with Strums” and “Fun with Folk Songs”, as well as “The Backpacker’s Songbook”. A lot of books, but they all look great. I’m looking forward to further improving my sight reading and rhythm skills. Maybe someday I can even be that annoying guy who brings a guitar to a campfire...
Highly recommended!

Fun with the Guitar edition by Mel Bay William Bay Joe Carr Arts Photography eBooks Reviews
got my first guitar and this book when I was 14 for Christmas. Great starting place for a new player. Now I'm 43 and a worship pastor. Needless to say, I kept playing )
so-so but I really liked the chord book.
Just what I needed
As expected
Excellent book for beginners learning the guitar, this book has been a great help as well as fun
Good book, easy to follow.
This book is great for kids or adults into learning campfire songs. Has such classics like home on the range. However most kids will only recognize about 4 or 5 songs in the book. If they aren't really interested in campfire songs they will probably get bored with this book.
